Tour Options

The following is a general explanation for selecting tour options, but just be aware that each operator runs its tours in its own unique way.

It's always best to clarify if you're unsure before a tour.

Tour Types

  1. Adventure Touring – Mixed terrain, gravel roads, light off-road, big-bike friendly.

  2. Single Track – Narrow, technical trails, suited for lightweight bikes.

  3. Enduro – Off-road-focused, moderate difficulty, includes hill climbs and water crossings.

  4. Desert Adventure – Sand dunes, remote outback, fuel and navigation critical.

  5. Tarmac & Twisties – Road-focused, twisty bitumen routes, may include light gravel detours.

  6. Learning Courses – Skills training for adventure riding, including off-road techniques, sand riding, and navigation.

Location

This is where the tour is primarily held or starts from, but more extensive tours can cross state boundaries.

Australian States:

  • New South Wales

  • Victoria

  • Queensland

  • South Australia

  • Western Australia

  • Tasmania

  • Northern Territory

  • Australian Capital Territory

  • International – Tours outside of Australia

Time Commitment

This helps you find tours that suit the available time you can commit.

  • Day – Quick, local, and accessible.

  • Weekend – Typically from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.

  • Long Weekend (4-5 Days) – Appeals to those looking for an extended ride.

  • Week (6-7 Days) – Requires more planning but is very popular for destination rides.

  • Expedition (7+ Days, Remote/Challenging) – Hardcore riders & bucket list trips.

Experience Level

The level of rider that a tour caters to is indicated here. Most tours are classified as Intermediate; however, those specifically designed for first-time riders will also include Beginners. Some tours are tailored for Experienced riders only, while others may accommodate a range of experience levels.

  • Beginner – Suitable for riders new to adventure riding or off-road.

  • Intermediate – Some off-road experience is required, typically on gazetted roads.

  • Experienced – Advanced riders only, technical terrain and challenging conditions.

Price Range

Slider Control – Users can set a minimum and maximum price range to filter tours within their budget.

Bike Inclusion

Does the tour include a motorcycle?

  • Bike Provided – The tour includes a motorcycle as part of the package.

  • Bike Hire Available – Riders can hire a bike for an additional cost.

  • Bring Your Own Bike – Riders must bring their own motorcycle.

Bike Size

Tours tend to suit specific bikes. Some rides are technical, and a big bike will be difficult to support, while others are more touring-focused, and small bikes are not suited to long stints on the open road.

  • Big Bike Friendly (1000cc+)—This is suitable for larger ADV bikes (GS1300, Multistrada, Super Ténéré).

  • Midweight (600-1000cc) – Ideal for middleweight ADV bikes (T7, 890 Adventure, V-Strom 800).

  • Lightweight (Under 600cc) – Best for small ADV and enduro bikes (WR250R, DRZ400, 450EXC).

Accommodation Type

Accommodation tends to have a significant impact on the tour price.

  • Camping – Riders camp along the route; bring your own camping gear.

  • Included Accommodation – Lodging is provided as part of the tour (pub, motel, or other).

  • Self-Arranged Accommodation – Riders book their own accommodation separately.

  • Mixed Accommodation – A combination of camping and included stays along the route.

Distance Per Day

Accommodation tends to have a significant impact on the tour price.

  • Short Days (<200km/day) – Easygoing pace, more stops.

  • Medium Days (200-400km/day) – Balanced ride, typical for most ADV tours.

  • Long Days (400km+ per day) – High-mileage days require endurance.

Group Size

Customers can check the tour's overall capacity and check the size of the group. The more exclusive, the more expensive.

  • Small Group (Max 5-6 riders) – More personal, less waiting, more expensive.

  • Medium Group (7-12 riders) – A good balance between social and manageable.

  • Large Group (12+ riders) – More social, potential for staggered riding, cheaper.

  • Private Tour Available – Custom tour for a solo rider or closed group.

Support Level

Each tour operator offers a unique experience, and support can vary. Regardless of the support provided, it's recommended that you consider your own personal support options for mechanical failure and personal safety.

  • Fully Supported – Support vehicle carrying gear and mechanical assistance.

  • Partially Supported – Limited support, like fuel drops or luggage transport.

  • Self-Supported – Riders carry everything themselves, no backup.

Navigation Type

The most common navigation options are lead rider and cornerman, but some tours offer more adventurous and self-sufficient options.

  • Lead Rider & Corner Man System – A lead rider navigates, and corner men hold positions at key turns.

  • GPS Navigation – Riders follow pre-loaded GPX tracks.

  • Point-to-Point Rally Style – Riders navigate checkpoints independently using roadbooks or GPS waypoints.
