In a country that's not known for mountains, our tallest is a glorified hill; the Great Alpine Road is unsurprisingly the centrepiece of roads in Australia. Travelling inland at Wangaratta, almost halfway along the main Sydney to Melbourne freeway, this road passes through Victoria's ski resorts to the coast.
It is a 250-kilometre-long stretch of road that takes in some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. From the snow-capped peaks of the Great Dividing Range to sweeping views of the alpine plains, rolling hills, mountain passes and charming villages, the Great Alpine Road is truly a road trip experience.
The road winds through the Alpine National Park, the Gippsland Lakes, and the Great Ocean Road. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and explore some of the region's best attractions, such as the spectacular wineries, mountain biking trails, and cosy towns and villages.
Whether you're searching for a leisurely ride or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, the Great Alpine Road has something for everyone. With its breathtaking scenery and plethora of activities, it's no wonder it's one of Australia's most popular tourist roads.
