Surf to Snow

Snowy Mountains

Nov 2024

Golden sands, Pacific Ocean, Sub-tropical forest, open plains, Australian Alps, abandoned, train tracks, wind farms, rusty tractors, sheep, cows and wildlife. Now not only is this all in a day's ride but it's all on just one tank of fuel.

Ok if any of that above has your tail wagging then this ride has a lot of incredible roads, scenery and also points of interest to enjoy before ascending to Charlotte Pass in the NSW Alpine area.

Starting in Eden you head south on the Pacific Hwy enjoying a few kms of twisties on the blacktop before turning right onto the Snake Track.

I guess the Snake Track gets its name as it snakes its way and runs alongside the Towamba River. A great unsealed road with a lot fo wildlife in the morning. Turning off the Snake Track onto Towamba Rd it also follows the river on a glorious dirt road crossing the river either over causeways or a beautiful old trestle bridge. The pace is relaxing to take in this magic country however the road starts climbing up a mountain and I couldn't resist the temptation to pick up the pace on a great fun road called Big Jack Mountain Rd.

You reach the small town of Cathcart with picture perfect rusty old tractors and cars in a paddock off the side of the road where you now find yourself in farm country. Turning off the Snowy River Way onto Mt Cooper Road you are now in the thick of it with working cattle farms on either side so beware of cattle and sheep on the road. Now don't worry you will be riding slow anyway to take in the magic views through here.

You will also enjoy the abandoned never ending train tracks and buildings all the way to Nimmitabel a reminder of a times gone by.

Heading west you will find yourself in the middle of what looks like hundreds of wind turbines just doing their thing and before you know it you are in a vast plain of nothing. Now considering only a few hrs earlier this ride was in the middle of a sub-tropical forest and now there is not even a single tree in sight is amazing.

Once through these open plains you are now in what I like to call Boulder Country just thousands of boulders everywhere which means the Snowies are getting real close. Arriving in Jindy from the Barry Way you soon reach Kosciuszko NP and the magic begins.

PLS NOTE: Kosciuszko Rd has restrictions on carrying snow chains until the first week of Oct. As motorcyclists we won't have access to this road until this restriction is lifted in Oct. I specifically was there on the day it opened to ensure my best chance of snow and there was a little bit, not much but a little bit.

Pls watch my video called 'Surf to Snow' on my youtube channel 'Moto Passport' whcih captures all the above in a 25minute feature film.
