GoPro Max 360 “Refresh” – A Facelift, Not a Revolution

GoPro has just re-released the Max 360 camera, but don’t mistake this for the brand-new model we’ve all been waiting for. Instead, this is more of a mid-cycle facelift—think of it like BMW tweaking a model between significant releases.

At $599.95 AUD, this refreshed Max 360 is essentially the same camera from 2019, now with a MAX Enduro Battery for better performance in extreme conditions and a ¼-20 tripod mount for added versatility. Beyond that? Not much has changed. The 5.6K video resolution still falls behind that of newer competitors like Insta360, which already offers dual 4K lenses.

On the software side, GoPro has beefed up the Quik App with AI-powered object tracking, better keyframing, and CameraFX tools to make 360 editing smoother. But that doesn’t make up for the fact that this hardware is still… well, the same.

What this move really signals is that when GoPro finally launches the true next-gen Max 2 later this year, it’s probably going to be a lot more expensive than the outgoing model. One can only hope that it will at least match the competition with dual 4K recording—because in 2025, 5.6K in a 360 camera just isn’t cutting it anymore.
